ROSLYN GIRDHAM
2026 Map Number: 27
Medium: Printmaking
As a native of the Columbia River Gorge, I draw my artistic inspiration from the beautiful creation that I see around me -dramatic landscapes, flora, fauna, and agriculture. Block printing is a type of relief printing that starts with transferring an original drawing onto a rubber or linoleum tile. The design is then carved using tools that are similar to wood carving tools. Once the carving is finished, I ink the tile with oil-based, water-soluble ink using a roller called a brayer. I then print the design onto paper using a table top hand press and or a baron or even a wooden spoon. I hang each print to dry--which takes about a week. The entire process is done by hand and each print is slightly different as a result.
